Mentoring

Available All Year

Dear Members,

Dame Juliana league has a good response from some of our members wishing to be mentored by someone more experienced in the ways of Fly Fishing.

The definition of mentoring is when someone shares their knowledge, skills, and experience with another person to help them to improve, or in this case, enjoy themselves!

Now that we have some DJL members who have expressed an interest in being mentored we need experienced members to share their fly fishing knowledge and skills. This is going to very simple: if you are willing to partner with someone the next time you go fishing, let me know!

Once we have a roster of people willing to mentor, we will give mentors the contact information of a member requesting to be mentored. Then, the next time you plan on going fishing you contact that person and simply invite them along.

We don't want you to go out of your way to provide an additional, unplanned fishing trip!

Rather we simply ask you to invite a  new fishing partner on a trip you already have planned. You shouldn't  feel the need to have to plan a new day on the water. This is like going fishing with a less experienced friend; you chat about what they are looking to learn and discuss the basics of what they'll need on the water, but you do it based on your schedule, not the pupil's.

The commitment in time could be for as long or short as you want, whatever your usual fishing trip is. You will have the joy of passing on what you find enjoyable to a new friend. The League will benefit by a more personal welcome to some of our newer and less experienced members!

Waiting To Hear From You,

Dear Members,

We're flirting with the idea of creating some targeted learn-to activities for our members. Before we exert some energy to create any new League activities we'ed like to know what interest there is among our members.

Fly Fishing Strategy & Tactics

Simply put,  how many of you would like to receive on-the-water instruction on fly fishing?  We envision establishing a roster of mentors who would contact you when they are going fishing. This arrangement would assume our members have the appropriate equipment to fish. Any of you who are interested (without any other conditions) to give this a try, contact me at

The header of your Email to me should be "Fly Fishing Strategy & Tactics."

Introduction To Fly Tying

Any of you who want to learn the basics of fly tying contact Matt Seymour to express your interest. The sessions will be offered dependent on Matt's availability and then matching it to yours. A few tools and materials would be available for member-use in these sessions. To express your interest, contact Matt at

The header of your Email to Matt should be "Introduction to Fly Tying."

John Is a member of the Dame Juliana League who was a Guest Fly Tyer at our 2024 Fly Tying Bee. John's tying enthusiasms include unusual pattens like The Hair Frog and The Swayback Hellgrammite.

John's written descriptions of his fly patterns are part history and part detailed, illustrated tying instructions.  These instructions are as similar to a monograph as they are to a recipe!
